The manufacturing process is more demanding, and they are generally produced from low-alloy steel (such as 35CrMo) following heat treatment. Grade 12.9 bolts: Tensile strength of approximately 1200 MPa, yield strength of 1080 MPa. These are among the highest-performance carbon steel high-strength bolts currently available on the market. They are commonly used in hydraulic equipment, high-pressure valves, heavy machinery and the mould industry, where they must withstand extremely high loads or impact loads. The manufacturing process involves deep quenching and tempering, as well as ultrasonic testing, to ensure a balance between strength and stability.
When designing engineering solutions or carrying out maintenance, it is crucial to select bolts with the appropriate performance grade based on factors such as load, operating environment and budget. For example:
Building Structures: Grade 8.8 bolts are generally used for steel structure connections, offering long-term durability.
Engines and Transmission Systems: Grade 10.9 or 12.9 bolts are recommended to ensure fastening requirements are met during high-speed vehicle operation. Medium-carbon steel is steel with a carbon content ranging from 0.25% to 0.60%, offering a balance of strength and toughness:
In terms of mechanical properties, the yield strength and tensile strength of medium-carbon steel are significantly higher than those of low-carbon steel, whilst maintaining better ductility and weldability than high-carbon steel. Following quenching and tempering heat treatment (quenching followed by high-temperature tempering), excellent comprehensive mechanical properties can be achieved, with tensile strength reaching 700–1000 MPa and elongation maintained at 10–15%. This favourable combination of strength and toughness makes it the material of choice for components subjected to alternating loads, such as shafts, gears and connecting rods.
In terms of machining characteristics, medium-carbon steel offers better machinability than high-carbon steel, but its weldability is inferior to that of low-carbon steel; preheating and controlled cooling rates are required during welding to prevent cracking. Cold forming presents moderate difficulty, whilst it is well-suited to hot forging and hot rolling processes.
Typical grades include 45 steel and 40Cr under Chinese standards, 1045 and 4140 under American standards, and C45 and 42CrMo4 under European standards. It is widely used in mechanical engineering, automotive transmission components, railway axles, and as a base material for moulds.
