To enhance the rust resistance of steel components, a strong oxidising agent is employed to oxidise the surface into a dense, smooth layer of iron(III) oxide. This thin layer of iron(III) oxide effectively shields the internal structure of the steel from oxidation. When oxidised at high temperatures (approximately 550°C), the resulting iron(III) oxide exhibits a sky-blue hue, hence the term “bluing treatment”. At lower temperatures (approximately 350°C), the formed magnetite appears dark black, hence termed blackening. In armaments manufacturing, bluing is commonly employed; in industrial production, blackening is more frequently utilised.
Operational procedure for black oxide treatment:
Workpiece clamping → Degreasing → Cleaning → Acid pickling → Cleaning → Oxidation → Cleaning → Saponification → Hot water rinsing → Inspection.
(1) Workpiece clamping: Design specialised fixtures or lifting devices according to the workpiece's shape and size. This ensures sufficient spacing between workpieces to prevent contact, allowing each to be fully immersed in the oxidation solution.
(2) Degreasing: This removes surface oils from the workpiece. Following machining (where bluing or blackening is the final process), oil residues inevitably remain on the surface, particularly when rust-preventative oils are used for interim protection. Any oil contamination severely impedes the formation of ferric oxide (Fe₃O₄), necessitating its removal prior to bluing or blackening.
