Alloy Steel M10 Thumb Metal Screw Oil Gas Industry Hot Dip Galvanized Pipeline![]()
1,Description:
2,Applications:
Principles of Hot-Dip Galvanizing
Fundamental Process
Hot-dip galvanizing involves immersing clean steel components into a bath of molten zinc at temperatures typically ranging from 435°C to 465°C. This creates a metallurgical bond between zinc and steel through a series of iron-zinc alloy layers, resulting in a durable protective coating that is integral to the substrate rather than merely surface-adhered.
Metallurgical Bond Formation
Upon immersion, molten zinc reacts with the iron in steel to form distinct alloy layers. The intermetallic compounds—gamma, delta, and zeta layers—grow at the interface through diffusion, creating a gradient from nearly pure steel at the base to nearly pure zinc at the surface. This metallurgical bonding ensures superior adhesion compared to electroplated coatings.
Surface Preparation Requirements
Effective galvanizing demands thorough surface preparation. Steel must be degreased to remove oils, pickled in acid to eliminate mill scale and rust, and fluxed to prevent oxidation before zinc immersion. Proper pretreatment ensures complete wetting by molten zinc and uniform coating formation.
3,Technical Advantages
Key Characteristics of Carbon Steel Zinc Plated
Cost-Effective Base Material
Carbon steel provides excellent mechanical strength and formability at a significantly lower cost than stainless steel grades. It offers high tensile strength and good machinability, making it economical for large-scale production and general-purpose applications.
Corrosion Protection Through Zinc Coating
The zinc plating creates a protective barrier that shields the underlying carbon steel from moisture and atmospheric corrosion. Zinc acts sacrificially, corroding preferentially to protect the base metal even if the coating is scratched or damaged.
Electrochemical Protection Mechanism
Zinc's position in the galvanic series allows it to provide cathodic protection to carbon steel. When exposed to electrolytes, zinc oxidizes first, preventing rust formation on the steel substrate and extending service life in outdoor and humid environments.
Versatile Finish Options
Zinc plating can be applied with various finishes including bright, yellow chromate, or clear passivation layers. These additional treatments enhance corrosion resistance further while providing aesthetic options ranging from shiny metallic to subdued matte appearances.
Good Electrical Conductivity
Unlike stainless steel, zinc-plated carbon steel maintains excellent electrical conductivity. This makes it suitable for electrical enclosures, grounding applications, and components requiring both structural integrity and electrical performance.
Temperature Limitations
The zinc coating typically withstands continuous service up to approximately 120°C, with short-term exposure possible up to 200°C. Beyond these temperatures, zinc may soften or vaporize, limiting high-temperature applications compared to uncoated or stainless alternatives.
Available in small packing, carton packing, or pallet configurations to meet your shipping and storage requirements.
